Uttar Pradesh Unveils Bold Vision for Buddhist Tourism at PATA

azibaza2 2025-08-31 2 minutes read

Uttar Pradesh has stepped into the global spotlight with a compelling showcase of its Buddhist heritage at the 47th PATA Travel Mart 2025 in Bangkok, positioning itself as a future nerve centre for spiritual tourism in Asia.

The state’s pavilion, themed “Embark on Your Bodhi Yatra in Uttar Pradesh”, drew widespread attention from international tourism professionals. Inaugurated by India’s Ambassador to Thailand, Nagesh Singh, the exhibit blended traditional design with modern storytelling to highlight six sacred sites—Sarnath, Kushinagar, Shravasti, Kapilvastu, Sankisa, and Kaushambi—each deeply tied to the life and teachings of the Buddha.

Sarnath, where Buddha delivered his first sermon, and Kushinagar, the site of his parinirvana, remain central to the circuit. Shravasti, where he spent many monsoon seasons, continues to attract pilgrims seeking deeper spiritual connection. Uttar Pradesh’s capital, Lucknow, serves as the gateway to these revered destinations.

Tourism officials, including Principal Secretary Mukesh Meshram, outlined a strategic roadmap to transform the region into a global hub for Buddhist travel by 2030. This includes upgraded infrastructure, improved connectivity, and sustainable tourism practices designed to enhance visitor experience while preserving cultural integrity.

The state’s participation in PATA was bolstered by a dedicated roadshow hosted by the Indian Embassy, where over 20 co-exhibitors from Uttar Pradesh engaged with global stakeholders. These efforts aim to forge new partnerships, attract investment, and expand the reach of the Buddhist Circuit to international audiences.

Minister Jaiveer Singh emphasised that Uttar Pradesh offers not only spiritual discovery but also immersive cultural journeys. With new airports, better rail links, and enhanced facilities at key sites, the state is preparing to welcome a new wave of Buddhist travellers seeking authenticity and depth.

As global interest in spiritual tourism grows, Uttar Pradesh’s blend of ancient wisdom and modern hospitality may well make it the starting point for every pilgrim’s Bodhi Yatra.
