Kaushambi is emerging as a key Buddhist pilgrimage destination, with standout sites including the new Buddha Theme Park in Kosam Inam, ancient monasteries, and nearby heritage landmarks like Anand Bhavan and Khusro Bagh. Improved access via the Vande Bharat Express makes it easier than ever to explore this spiritual and cultural hub.

Uttar Pradesh’s Kaushambi district is undergoing a remarkable transformation as part of the state’s ambitious Buddhist Circuit Tourism Plan. Once a quiet historical site, Kaushambi is now being positioned as a major draw for both domestic and international Buddhist pilgrims, thanks to a blend of heritage conservation and modern infrastructure.
At the heart of this revival is the Buddha Theme Park in Kosam Inam village, a sprawling 11-hectare development designed to immerse visitors in the life and teachings of the Buddha. With 68% of the Rs 22.93 crore project already completed, the park will feature an open-air theatre, a museum chronicling Buddha’s journey, intricate murals, a thematic entrance gate, and visitor-friendly amenities such as a cafeteria and guesthouses.
Kaushambi’s ancient Buddhist monasteries remain central to its spiritual appeal. These historic sites, long revered by pilgrims, offer a direct connection to the region’s Buddhist legacy. The state government is enhancing these monasteries with upgraded facilities to accommodate growing tourist interest, ensuring that the spiritual atmosphere is preserved while improving visitor comfort.
Nearby Prayagraj is also seeing renewed attention, with two key monasteries—the Emperor Harsh Vardhan Buddhist Monastery in Arail and the Sugatanand Buddhist Monastery—undergoing major upgrades. These sites, once overlooked, are now being integrated into the broader Buddhist circuit with dedicated funding of Rs 3 crore and Rs 1 crore respectively.
Beyond strictly Buddhist landmarks, heritage sites like Anand Bhavan and Khusro Bagh are being promoted as part of the cultural itinerary. While not Buddhist in origin, these sites enrich the historical context of the region and offer visitors a more diverse experience.
Crucially, the launch of the Varanasi–Khajuraho Vande Bharat Express has revolutionised access to Kaushambi. With a stop in Prayagraj, the high-speed train links Kaushambi to major Buddhist destinations like Sarnath and Khajuraho, allowing tourists to explore multiple sites in a single, seamless journey.
With its blend of sacred heritage, modern amenities, and strategic connectivity, Kaushambi is poised to become a cornerstone of India’s Buddhist tourism revival—welcoming pilgrims, scholars, and curious travellers alike.
