Myanmar’s Golden Rock Festival Draws Pilgrims Again

One of Myanmar’s most revered Buddhist sites is preparing for its busiest season of the year as the Buddha Pujaniya Festival opens at Kyaiktiyo Pagoda on 25 October.

Known internationally as the Golden Rock, Kyaiktiyo Pagoda attracts thousands of pilgrims who make the journey to the mountaintop shrine in Mon State, where a gilded granite boulder appears to balance dramatically on the edge of a cliff.

The annual festival begins on the full moon of Thadingyut, one of Myanmar’s most important religious holidays, and marks the start of a pilgrimage season that will continue until the full moon of Kason several months later.

To cope with the expected influx of visitors, festival organisers have arranged 152 mountain buses to carry worshippers and tourists between the base of the mountain and the summit. The site’s cable car system will also continue operating throughout the festival period.

Located near the town of Kyaikto, around 160 kilometres south-east of Yangon, Kyaiktiyo is among Myanmar’s most iconic landmarks. The pagoda itself rises just 7.3 metres high, but its fame comes from its spectacular setting atop a massive boulder covered in gold leaf applied by generations of male devotees.

According to local tradition, the rock remains balanced because of a sacred relic of the Buddha enshrined within the pagoda. The site has long been regarded as one of the country’s most important pilgrimage destinations and is visited by both domestic and international travellers.

The festival is open to the public rather than being reserved for invited guests or religious officials. Pilgrims arriving during the coming weeks will find accommodation, restaurants, souvenir shops and medical facilities available within the wider complex.

For many visitors, however, the journey is as significant as the destination. The final approach to the pagoda involves a steep ascent through mountainous terrain before reaching the summit, which offers sweeping views across the surrounding hills of Mon State.

The event also coincides with the Thadingyut public holiday, which runs from 25 to 27 October this year. The holiday commemorates the Buddha’s return from heaven and is traditionally marked by religious ceremonies, visits to pagodas and gatherings with families.

The festival comes at a time when Myanmar’s tourism sector is seeking signs of recovery after years of political instability and conflict. While international visitor numbers remain below pre-crisis levels, major religious sites such as Kyaiktiyo continue to attract large numbers of domestic pilgrims.

With its blend of spiritual significance, dramatic scenery and centuries-old traditions, the Golden Rock remains one of the country’s most powerful symbols of Buddhist devotion and one of Southeast Asia’s most remarkable pilgrimage destinations.
