Mulbekh Monastery and its 30 ft tall Buddha statue, Ladakh’s unexplored gem

There are many things that make Mulbekh Monastery a popular tourist attraction in Kargil. Apart from its picturesque landscape, the other prominent attraction of this place is the 30 ft tall statue of the Maitreya Buddha, in the Mulbekh Monastery, which is also one of the most popular monasteries in the Ladakh region.


This monastery boasts of ancient relics and frescoes, apart from a huge prayer wheel, which further adds to the calm ambience of this place.

Believed to have been built around 800 years ago, Mulbekh Monastery consists of two gompas, Serdung Gompa of Drukpa sect and Rgaldan-se Gompa of Gelugpa sect.

How to reach Mulbekh Monastery?

The best way to reach the monastery from the city of Leh is by taking a rental car or jeep, or you can even opt to drive your own vehicle. You can take the Srinagar-Leh Highway to get to the monastery, which is around 216 km from Leh, and takes around 4.5 to 5 hours to get there.
