Bhutan’s Central Monastic Body is holding the annual Vajrakilaya Phurpai Drubchen at Buddha Dordenma Kuensel Phodrang in Thimphu from 15 to 21 February, marking the forty-sixth birthday of His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck.
The Vajrakilaya ritual, rooted in Vajrayana Buddhism, is dedicated to clearing obstacles and transforming negative energies into wisdom. Over 300 monks from Tango and Dorden Tashithang Buddhist University are taking part, led by His Eminence the Padma Acharya, Tsulag Lopen Karma Rangdrol, one of Bhutan’s most senior monastic officials.
The ceremonies encompass the four tantric activities of Vajrakilaya—pacifying, enriching, magnetising and subjugating—performed continuously throughout the week. These practices are believed to promote longevity, wisdom and harmony, while countering malevolent forces.
Khenpo Rinchen Choezang, abbot of Kuensel Phodrang, explained that the ritual is intended to bless participants with long life and success, while also supporting His Majesty’s vision for Gelephu Mindfulness City, a project designed to balance foreign investment with cultural and environmental preservation.
The Buddha Dordenma itself, one of the largest sitting Buddha statues in the world, provides a striking backdrop. Made of bronze and gold, it fulfils an ancient prophecy and symbolises the indestructible nature of enlightenment.
Organisers say the Vajrakilaya Drubchen is not only a tribute to the King but also a prayer for peace and happiness across Bhutan and beyond. For many, the gathering at Buddha Dordenma is a reminder of the country’s deep spiritual heritage and its commitment to global harmony.
