The 49-meter-tall Auspicious Buddha (Sakyamuni) statue of the Mengle Grand Buddhist Temple is seen in Xishuangbanna, southwest China’s Yunnan Province

Mengle Grand Buddhist Temple is situated on Nanlian Mountain in Xishuangbanna, southwest China. With Theravada Buddhism and traditional Dai-style architecture as its core, the temple is a popular cultural tourist destination that combines faith and natural beauty.

Originally known as Jingpiao Buddhist Temple, it was built by a Dai king during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), destroyed in warfare in 1848, and reconstructed in 2005.

Centered on the life of Sakyamuni Buddha, the scenic area is home to religious buildings including Jingpiao Hall. It also hosts regular activities such as peacock releases and water-splashing experiences, integrating rich culture and folk traditions. The 49-meter-tall Auspicious Buddha (Sakyamuni) statue, one of the tallest of its kind in Asia, stands as the landmark of the temple.
