The powerful earthquake that struck on 28 March caused damage within the pagoda compound. However, efforts are underway to restore the Mahamuni Pagoda quickly so that worshippers can visit again soon.

U Mya Win stated, “The Maha Muni Buddha image itself was not damaged by the earthquake. However, some structures, including the archways, corridors, main platform, and certain smaller stupas, suffered damage. A few visitors sustained minor injuries during the tremor, but as of now, there have been no reported fatalities. Security personnel and local philanthropic groups are working together to clear debris.

Restoration efforts will proceed as quickly as possible.”

The strong earthquake struck Myanmar on 28 March. The tremor caused structural damage to high-rise buildings, residential homes, pagodas, and monastic structures in Mandalay.
