Thailand. Wat Phra Mahathat wins UNESCO heritage honour.

Thailand has celebrated a historic cultural achievement with the inscription of Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan in Nakhon Si Thammarat on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The announcement, made in Busan during the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee, makes the temple the country’s ninth World Heritage site – and the first in the southern region.

Culture Minister Sabeeda Thaised hailed the decision as recognition of the temple’s significance not only for Thailand but for humanity. “Its inscription is both a source of pride and a shared responsibility to ensure its preservation for future generations,” she said, inviting Thais nationwide to join in the celebrations.

The Fine Arts Department has marked the occasion by opening a permanent exhibition at the National Museum in Nakhon Si Thammarat, dedicated to the temple’s history and cultural role.

UNESCO cited the temple’s Outstanding Universal Value, noting its unique blend of Brahmanical, Hindu, Mahayana and Theravada traditions. The site reflects centuries of religious and artistic exchange, influenced by Nalanda in India, Central Java, Sri Lanka and Mon culture from Myanmar. These traditions later shaped monuments across Thailand and neighbouring countries.

Beyond its architecture, Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan remains a living centre of faith, linked to local legends, literary heritage and the celebrated Nora dance tradition. UNESCO described it as a testimony to the enduring relationship between sacred places and their communities, inspiring religious centres across the region.

Celebrations at the temple were attended by senior officials, monks, students and residents, with adviser Kraisorn Wisitwong chairing the ceremony. The Thai delegation in Busan, led by Ms Thaised and Natural Resources Minister Suchart Chomklin, welcomed the inscription as a milestone for southern Thailand’s cultural identity.

For Thailand, the listing underscores the country’s rich spiritual heritage and strengthens its global cultural standing. For Nakhon Si Thammarat, it places the city firmly on the world map as guardian of a site that bridges history, faith and art.
